One of 2022’s most popular trends is taking the road less travelled on your own. While travelling alone isn’t new, Google search volumes for “solo travel” have increased significantly between 2021 and 2022, showing that vacationers’ have a growing appetite for exploring the world without company.

Better known as taking a solocation, the idea of satisfying your wanderlust alone may seem strange to some but there are countless reasons to try it.

Solocations are an excellent way to avoid the disappointment of cancelled group travel plans, build an entirely personalised itinerary and invest in your self-discovery. Most importantly, its your chance to be completely free.

“Travelling alone is becoming extremely popular, with considerably more people choosing to take time to learn about themselves, explore something new on their own, and avoid the drawbacks of travelling in larger groups,” says Marc Wachsberger: CEO of The Capital Hotels and Apartments. “Solocations allow travellers to experience the full breadth of a destination at their own pace. Whether you want to be in a calmer, more relaxed environment or want something more adventurous, travelling by yourself means you are only bound by your own wants and needs.”

As ideal as all this may sound, going on your first-ever solocation can be challenging. So here are some things to consider to make the most of your first solo vacation.

Planning is everything

Planning your first solocation can be overwhelming. South Africa alone is bursting with astounding and unique locations. As such, the best place to start is within. Spend some time thinking about what you have always wanted to see and do. Which cultural activities appeal to you the most? What landmarks have you always wanted to visit? What experiences pique your interest?

For example, if you’re looking for a high-end experience where all your heart’s desires are gathered in one place, The Capital Zimbali could be a perfect choice. There you’ll have the option of enjoying the tranquillity of the hotel’s signature spa experience and the quiet luxury of the pool. Or, if you are up for a bit of adventure, you can enjoy the natural majesty of the hiking trails and adult swimming pool. Regardless of what your inclinations are, it is hard to see how you could ever want to leave.

If Cape Town has been on your bucket list for a relaxing solo getaway, accommodation options that offer spa facilities, are within earshot of crashing waves and have panoramic views Table Mountain are just a click away. Take The Capital Mirage in the heart of Cape Town

for example. Located close to the V&A Waterfront, the iconic Zeitz Mocaa Contemporary Art Museum, Camps Bay and the party hub that is Kloof street, any solo traveller would be able to indulge their every whim. If you do not feel like straying too far from the hotel, this 5-star establishment offers everything from a sleek gym and spa to two sumptuous restaurants and a snooker lounge.

Book your trip in advance

Next up is securing your solocation ahead of time, especially your hotel stay. This is crucial during peak seasons and can save you money by helping you get the best accommodation deals and even ensuring you lock down your desired room. Getting your bookings done as soon as possible will also help you unlock amazing offers to enhance your experience

Stay safe

As great as solocations are, they can quickly become unpleasant if you’re not safe. When you’re exploring somewhere new on your own, you’re naturally more vulnerable, so keep your guard up as much as possible, and remember that not everyone in a friendly city or town has good intentions.

Avoid walking alone at night, and always keep some form of identification on you. If you are abroad, familiarise yourself with where the embassy or consulates are. Ensure you inform your loved ones when you’re leaving your hotel, where you’re going and when you’ve arrived back in your room safely. Most importantly, leave a copy of your complete itinerary and travel places with someone safe. This will make it easier for people to track you down when needed and can act as a valuable resource for checking in.
