Key advice for Women who aspire to become leaders in their Field

In many industries, we are seeing more women in leadership positions, and this is transforming the business landscape positively and impacting the greater economic outlook of South Africa.

It is crucial to have women in leadership positions because women wear many hats. They lead with empathy and place a high emphasis on ethics and impact, which is now more needed than ever before. Historically, emphasis was placed on the male counterpart, and this makes it even more imperative for women to make their mark and impact, not only in their business but within the greater scope of industries and the wider business communities.

Vulnerability, collaboration and leading from the back

The greatest skill that women are able to harness when compared to our male counterparts, is vulnerability. Men do not usually ask for help. Women are honest and open to not having all the answers. We ask for help and seek clarity. This is advantageous to growth because it helps to find and fill the gaps and leap over obstacles instead of being stunted by them.

Every person has their own leadership style, but the style that works for me hinges on trust and leading from the back. I believe in allowing people to do their job by respecting competencies and skills. I use my awareness of not having all the answers to help grow the competencies of my colleagues and staff.

The power of collaboration is extremely valuable. If you want to go far, go alone. If you want to go further, work together. I am passionate about sharing ideas. I know that many people loathe sharing their good ideas, but not all ideas will be stolen, some may bring you into the fold or spark something greater.

The right career choices are pivotal to growth

I have been blessed with many pivotal career opportunities. But I do think that this is partly contributed to good decision-making on my career trajectory. Making the right choices now plants the seeds for future growth. I do believe women need to plot their career paths carefully, especially because we are mothers, daughters, wives, friends, and individuals who wear so many hats. We strategically need to make space for our careers.

One of my greatest achievements was conceptualizing and creating one of the most beautiful stores in a leading South African mall. Another seminal moment was being recognized as SA’s Top Women in Retail – Woman on the Rise, in the Women in Retail Leadership Circle (WIRLC), which recognizes 20 women across the world. Those moments have been pivotal to my career.

A piece of advice to young women aspiring for leadership roles in their field is to be authentic, be yourself, trust and uphold your values and your vision. Women are easily intimated, especially by their male counterparts. And if you have doubts, don’t walk away scared, walk away because the role doesn’t fulfill you or speak to your true self. There will be challenging moments in your career when you feel like giving up. Remember how far you have come and instead of crumbling rather show up, stand up and fight.
